In Defense of Female WebMasters
By Jason Chen
After reading the editorial written by
Meri of Temple O' Trunks, I was inspired to write
an editorial of my own supporting her cause. I must
imagine how bad she feels when somebody sends her an
email that says something like "Wow! You're a girl!
I never knew girls watch DBZ or make such good webpages".
As we can see, these types of sexist comments really
hurt people's feelings. These sexist beliefs and stereotypes
are inappropriate and unnessessary, but unfortunately,
it does exist.
Let me start off by saying that Dragonball Z is directed
to the male population. But does that mean girls can't
watch it? Absolutely not. In the beginning of each DBZ
episode, there's no flashing sign that says "Warning:
This show is intended for guys only. Girls should not
watch this". I would understand why people would
be surprised that girls watch DBZ and make webpages,
that being a guy myself. But it is absolutely wrong
to "assume" that only guys watch DBZ. There
are indeed a lot of DBZ fans out there that are female.
Also, it doesn't matter if the webmaster is male/female
as long as he/she can make an awesome webpage. When
I found out that the webmaster of Temple O' Trunks is
female, I wasn't surprised. Heck, some of my favorite
Dragonball Z sites such as Temple O'Trunks and Juunanagou's
Temple are run by female webmasters. My belief is that
as long as a webpage is good, then I will visit it no
matter what the gender of the webmaster is. THE MOST
COMMON MISCONCEPTION OF DBZ WEBMASTERS IS THAT GUYS
HAVE BETTER SITES THAN GIRLS BECAUSE THERE'S MORE DBZ
SITES RUN BY GUYS. Most of these sites that are run
by guys contain stolen information and pics, unlike
the true quality displayed by the ToT. Being a guy,
I own a website myself and it is nowhere near as good
as Meri's! In fact, the ToT is better than most DBZ
sites run by guys. To get to my point, I believe that
girls can make webpages just as good or even better
than guys do.
Now, girls may think that all guys are immature, but
let me say this. These are the words coming out of a
sophmore in high school. I mean, most girls would
probably assume that I would be an immature person before
reading this editorial, and I don't blame them. However,
there are alot of guys out there that share the same
non-sexist belief as I do.
The women of the DBZ webmaster community have always
gotten the short end of the bargain and are sometimes
doubted of their abilities. Women can make webpages
just as good or even better than guys do, however, not
everyone gives them a chance because of their gender.
They deserve a lot better than this. Even though one
person such as I cannot make a difference, females can
and should make themselves heard by going out there
and make a quality, original webpage. The women webmasters
are still in the shadows of the male webmasters. As
far as the ratio of male DBZ webmasters to female DBZ
webmasters is concerned, the truth is that quality should
be emphasized over quantity. The next time you see a
DBZ site run by a female, give it a chance by visiting
it.
