Bush’s vision is clearly presented in Lain. As the Wired becomes increasingly vast, and the belief that "all information on the Wired should be shared" (Lain, Layer 08: Rumors) spreads, it is essential that the series explain how the Wired arrived at its current state. Lain does so by including real life events and people. Perhaps by telling the story of Vannevar Bush, Memex, etc., the series is able to become somewhat more believable. The idea of the Wired, and a world in which the Wired and the real world appear to be merging, does not seems as farfetched if descriptions of actual events are portrayed. In this way, Lain can convince the viewer that if these events are true, then maybe the world shown in this anime is not too far off from our own reality.
